The Story Behind Old Country Inn Restaurant

More Than a Restaurant, A Living Piece of History

There is something special about walking into a place that has stories in its walls. Old Country Inn has been standing on Unionville’s picturesque Main Street since 1872, when Dr. R. P. Eckardt, great-grandson of the village’s original settlers, built what locals would come to know as The Doctor’s House.

For decades, this charming stone house served as both home and office to a succession of caring physicians who tended to the community. When we opened Old Country Inn in 1978, we knew we were not just starting a restaurant. We were becoming caretakers of a legacy.

Today, as you step inside, you will find the same warmth that once greeted patients over a century ago. Our two cozy dining rooms in the original house still hold that old world charm, while our bright Winter Garden addition brings in the sunshine and a touch of greenery. And when the weather is just right, there is nothing quite like dining on our European style terrace, surrounded by French doors and the gentle rhythm of Unionville’s Main Street.

One of our favourite treasures sits just outside, an original wine press built in 1871, shipped all the way from Raiding, Burgenland, Austria. It came from the very house where the composer Franz Liszt was born. We like to think a little of that creative spirit still lingers here.

Our mission has always been simple, to serve the freshest food possible, prepared the old fashioned way. That means bone marrow demi glace simmered for hours, hand breaded schnitzels cooked to golden perfection, spaetzle noodles made from scratch, and bread dumplings that would make any Austrian grandmother proud.

We are not just feeding people. We are sharing a piece of our heritage, one plate at a time.
